Just booked the flight. I land at Newark, Tuesday 29th June at 2:20pm. That'll give me time to swan around the city, be there for the 4th, hopefully meet Howard if he hasn't lit out for the holidays and then get my arse to Cleveland.

I depart New York on the 20th of July. I figure that gives time after getting back from Lebowskifest (Christ, I never in a million years thought I'd be going to that - which is AWESOME in its randomness) to hop a flight and all the rest.

The best thing about all this? It wasn't happening five days ago. And now it's bought and paid for.

THIS IS WHAT I SIGNED UP FOR. FUCKIN' YAWP!

PS: Got the idea that at some point I want to take an icebreaker from Argentina to Antarctica. Wondering if an acquaintance still spends six months at a research station in the area. Beginning to feel like the purpose of my life is to learn how to travel anywhere for sod all.

I AM LOVING THIS.

Before you go you should consider a tattoo. (Your friend with the Batman obsession should join you.

That is an awesome idea.
The best yet.
I almost want to steel it.

Woah, looks like you'll be zooming all over the place. :)

I've been saying the same to a few folks lately -- despite my well-known hatred of the cold, there's sights to be seen and magnificent photos to be taken. :)

Absolutely. I want to see those landscapes with with my own eyes.

And ride a polar bear.

Bah, the handling would be like driving a 4WD. If you want manoeuvrability and speed, strap one of these onto each foot:

And they corner like they're on rails. :)

We're in NY for the 4th of July, staying in Chelsea, if it doesn't clash with stuffes.

Are you kidding? THAT'S AWESOME.

Not sure what part of the city I'll be in (staying with friend of a friend) but if it doesnt clash with whatever plans you had I say we ride this thing like a dog train.

We're arriving late on the third and fly out on the fifth (it's a stopover on the way to Central America) so we'll be about all day on the fourth. Hoping to make it to the Met http://www.metmuseum.org/home.asp and wander around Central Park and see some fireworks, no other huge plans. Definately up for a catch-up at some stage if you can make it, whether that is a super strong NY style coffee in the morning or booze or whatever, just let me know!
Chelsea is on Manhattan Island (west side) and in the arty farty alternative area so there should be loads of kewl things to see there.

Nifty. A friend put her hand up to play tour guide, and so far she seems really accomplished in that regard. Definitely want to see the Met and Central Park, but there's also spectacular fireworks on the Hudson, usually a bunch of tall ships and a tonne of other stuff going on. So, colour me flexible.

At this point I'm staying on 150th Street (north end, west side I think.) FYI.

Cool, a native guide would be awesome. We too are flexible and open to suggestion, so you guys just come up with whatever seems fun and let us know closer to the day and we will see if we can make an Intersecting-Plan-O-Doom. We want to do some cultural things and some Fourth of July stuff that isn’t a total pain to get to and is reasonably cheap, but other than that we are unfussed. (I have a BEE in my BONNET about getting to the Met this time round, have failed to get there twice so far.) Am sure we can co-ordinate beers somewhere as a minimum.

Cheap works for me in spades, and Native Guide had some cool ideas (she's done the guide thing before.)

Am very much up for the Met.

When Ive got a moment at home I'll get onto the Guide and see what she has to say about stuff to do.

Also, I have just got a position as a (very lowly paid) blogger for Boomerang books, who specialise in Australian books. Can I do a fun bio on you as an Australian author for it? You know, the real world of writing as a living.

Actually, that WOULD be awesome!

Realistically will you/we have the time? What with the meeting and the running and the Met?

You are talking to someone who, as her dissertation, did it on Irish pubs and had a section on how to interview informally in pubs when you can barely hear them and have five minutes before they get bored and / or try to snog you. :D It'll rock.

Well alright then. I'd certainly PREFER to do it this way. :)

Just wanted to add, a backpack works way better than a single strap bag for days touring a city. IMHO*.

*Opinion formed from using a fucking messenger bag Crumpler for many trips.

I'd never do that. Great way to wreck one shoulder, and the constant bumping against my hip would drive me loco. I've got a good quality hiker's pack that I'll be living out of, but definitely looking for a separate backpack for daystuff.

Although now I'm wondering how to secure the damned thing. I mean, I can sorta lock it with luggage locks, but some of those zips... not possible. While I'm keen to find good material, My Own True Prison Story can wait.

Eh.

Agreed. I've been living out of a piece of Communist paraphernalia I bought in Beijing last year. It's a really awesome bag, except that it slowly kills one shoulder and when you're prone to walking a city for 6 hours at a time, carrying a laptop, camera, a couple of books, a bottle of drink, etc. It certainly adds up.

I stopped using courier bags for anything that heavy years ago, once I realised my posture was beginning to tilt to starboard. Backpacks might be slightly less cool, but not as uncool as that.
