I was sitting here trying to put it more eloquently...

But no, you've nailed it.

Vom... but I suppose anything that hammers some literature into dumb teenagers' heads can't be all bad.

(Also: Wuthering Heights is not the happy romantic story that people seem to think. It's full of obsession and addiction and child abuse.)

Yeah, but you may hear Tori Amos. Or Amanda Palmer. Or the chick from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

I agree, if kids read it, then it's a win. I can remember the same sort of outrage when kids listened to Rollins after seeing it on Pump Up The Volume, instead of discovering indie music for themselves.

Ow, that just hurts. That it is a viable marketing strategy is terrifying.

Well, I guess when it comes to marketing, any angle is fair game.

Especially when the text is in the public domain. Nothing like not having to pay for the story to make any marketing plan seem like a good one.

Bingo. What I can't work out is why every publishing house on Earth hasn't done this.

I suspect because whoever owns the Twilight branding would kick their asses.

(Incidentally, isn't 'Twilight' a brand of really crap chocolates?)

The cover doesnt mention Twilight. :) It says it's Edward and Bella's favourite book. Those names aren't copyrighted.

I would argue that Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters are pretty much the same sort of thing really, just done with a bit more panache.

I saw a Robert Patterson bio that you could flip over for 'team Jacob' if you wanted to read the other male romantic interests' bio. It was a thin little book, puny and puling.

Imagining for an instant that they were real people, who's opinions mattered, you can be pretty sure that it was Bella's favourite book, and that Edward was just agreeing to get her to not sleep with him.
