So I'm sitting here listening to Fear Factory and doing pro bono copy work for an accountant in Helsinki as CV filler. It's less boring than what I currently do for a wage, and more boring than doing something else.*

John Cusack and Tim Robbins starred - early in their careers - in a movie called Tapeheads directed by ex-Monkee Michael Nesmith. It could almost have been a Savage Steve Holland flick. It took the same comedic liberties with reality that Better Off Dead did (and featured uncredited cameos by a tonne of people, like Stiv Bators and Weird Al Yankovic.). There's a scene early on where they're on the roof of their apartment at dawn, when Robbins suggests going into business for themselves as low-budget video entrepreneurs. He described the idea as "Do what you gotta so you can do what you wanna." I never forgot it.

Doing work like this puts me in good company. At some point all the greats did this.

You never see a starship captain use the bog.

*: Brought to you by my need to do something else.

+: My first proper weekend off for a month.
+/-/LOL: First thing that happens: refusal to sleep.

Soooo... apply for two grants, compose a support letter for my agent, finish copywriting thing, work on novel. Then sleep maybe. Glad I work afternoons.

So weird having J back over there so quickly. -15 and snowbound. Even seeing shots of Edinburgh and London all whited out is making me nostalgic for something I've never known firsthand.

I want to get to Istanbul. I want DK to show me the street where he followed his mother's ghost. I want to ride an overpacked bus along a mountain trail to an abandoned Greek city in the Turkish highlands. I want to ride horses through a Scandinavian forest.

And I want to do some really stupid shit. Follow my feet, eat what I find, sleep where I lay, wake up and do it all again. And come home to love what I have.

At some point I'll throttle back on the goosh, but at the moment it's pretty much all I've got.

At some point within the next 24 hours I'll be purchasing a 5-7-stop round-the-world ticket. Checking to see if I can swing a stopover in either LA or NY en route to Frankfurt. If the timing's bad for USanians I can go via Asia instead, and do NY around September. But I still need to confirm any and all of that with the agency first.

EDIT: NY has to be September. Ce la vie. Probably flying out of London on the 22nd of August, and I can be in NY for 1-2 weeks. Longer if I get a better offer than flying back to Melbourne. :)

EDIT: At the moment this is the itinerary for the round-the-world ticket. I may forfeit the return Melbourne trip. It's there in case I can't secure a stay longer than three months
