I unpacked an external HD. Plugged it in. Heard a snap. A wisp of smoke.
I think that was writing backups, 10 years of journal backups and about 12,000 photographs from my time with
morgan303.
Someone tell me that's just the non-critical power supply or something, not the actual drive.
I need to invest in some major online storage and some kind of insane DL/UL broadband plan. This is getting beyond a joke.

Date: 2010-09-26 02:45 pm (UTC)I don't even know how an external USB works.
I'm not optimistic, but I have been having a bitch of a night with recalcitrant drives.
There is a good chance the data can be recovered, it just depends on what you are prepared to pay.
I assume you're talking about one of the smaller deals, rather than the heftier drives?
Good luck.

Otherwise, this will cost you some bucks to get fixed.

Date: 2010-09-26 09:02 pm (UTC)A second drive holds power for about 10 seconds then fades. I don't know if it's the wiring in this very old house, or if being in storage for 6 months has done something. It's weird.
