No way.

I unpacked an external HD. Plugged it in. Heard a snap. A wisp of smoke.

I think that was writing backups, 10 years of journal backups and about 12,000 photographs from my time with [profile] morgan303.

Someone tell me that's just the non-critical power supply or something, not the actual drive.

I need to invest in some major online storage and some kind of insane DL/UL broadband plan. This is getting beyond a joke.

Frankly, I don't know.
I don't even know how an external USB works.

I'm not optimistic, but I have been having a bitch of a night with recalcitrant drives.

There is a good chance the data can be recovered, it just depends on what you are prepared to pay.

I assume you're talking about one of the smaller deals, rather than the heftier drives?

Good luck.

Likely just the drive housing. At worst, it's the circuitboard on the drive itself, which any really good computer repair shop can replace.

First, if it's a sata or IDE drive, plug it into a computer. Remove the housing and plug it in - data should be there if the drive is fine.

Otherwise, this will cost you some bucks to get fixed.
