Melbourne to London Was fine. London to NY was fine. NY to London was fine. Got off the plane, carried on as per usual. Got off the London to Melbourne flight. Felt fine. Stayed up drinking. Got 4 hours sleep. Carried on. Then got slammed.

I wonder what it is about Melbourne. Had no problem sleeping while I was away. Slept on wooden floors and was fine. Slept sitting up, slept in trucks. But here, in my own bed, insomnia. Unless it's 2pm in which case I'm almost KO before I know it.

Timing could be better. Need to sort a new house, movers, storage, trip to see family, London recruitment, get a job, finish a book and write a few articles... All before this house folds in 25 days. All on a credit card because I found out about this only 4 days before getting back.

Wishing I'd smuggled back a case of Irn Bru.

It'll work out, but it may mean I literally abandon or give away a lot of what I own. If it happens I'll post a list and people can go dibs on whatever appeals.

I'm not sure if it's similar, but I am seeing a relationship between this and another phenomenon to which I don't know the official name.

When required, the body can kick things up a gear in order to get you through whatever the challenge is at the time. The example I thought of is how people pull themselves through a busy period at work while feeling fine, but afterwards, when they finally have a chance to relax, their body pays the debt and the immune system drops. This is why people usually only get sick on holidays, because their body is pulling them through the periods of work and when it's finally over, the body drops its defenses.
I suppose you could draw similar patterns to getting into a fight, or climbing a mountain, etc etc.

Just thinking, perhaps your body did all it could to get you through your travels just fine, and perhaps now it is home, it has stopped trying so hard to be super awesome in strange circumstances and so now it's getting affected by the thoughts and circumstances which keep you awake.

Wishing I could sound more intelligent on the subject but there you go.

I'd wondered the same thing. I have friends who flog themselves at work and then get sick for 2 weeks. In fact before leaving Edin I suspected I'd get very sick almost before I got back. It hasn't happened, but you may be right as far as the lag is concerned.
