Edinburgh Day 3
Aug. 18th, 2010 02:58 amWoke late-ish. Made a cheese and bacon sandwich and strolled through Grassmarket to catch the Best of Edinburgh. Half the acts were pretty good. If you get a chance to see Jason Chong (Australian), he's pretty good.
Came home, grabbed an hour's sleep, then met
coffee_lifeform for dinner in a pub across from the old gallows site. Steak and ale pie for me, curry for her. Talked for a couple of hours, went and caught Sean Hughes' set at Pleasance (not so great, to be honest), and then retired to the Library Bar in the enormously ornate piece of centuries-old architecture that the University of Edinburgh students have to make use of as their refec. It's freaking gorgeous. Bar in a refitted library. Mezzanine connected by ancient spiral staircases. Polished wood, glass-fronted cases, the whole bit.
Had a couple of bourbons, talked, walked back to the square I'm staying in, had a cup of tea and she walked me down to the Assembly spiegeltent on George Street where the people I'm staying with were all gathered to see Karaoke Circus.
Brilliant. Really, really brilliant. They do 2-3 a year in London and 1 in Edin per year. Comedians and open mic, supported by actual musicians, perform numbers and are judged by a Sean Locke-ish MC and his cabaret grotesque offsider, The Baron. The vibe was immensely cool, everyone had a blast, zero cynicism and the crowd bought right into the whole thing from the first bar.
And I saw Jim Bob from Carter USM cover 'Common People' with his costar from the musical he's in. Got pics, got vid, had a blast.
I've drunk more booze in three days than I have in the four months since I left home.
