Peter Murphy
Aug. 6th, 2010 01:11 amThe gig switched from the Electric Ballroom to Dingwalls in Camden Market. Small venue: dark and a bit pokey. Which meant I was about 5 metres from the stage and elevated. I love gigs like that. Intimate, and Murphy went off. Chatty, histrionic, the whole bit. The show was 50% solo stuff, 50% Bauhaus. High points included 'Marlena Deitrich's Favourite Song' segueing into the last portion of 'Bela Lugosi's Dead', and 'Cuts You Up' as the encore. I didn't want to watch the thing through a viewfinder, so allowed myself 30 seconds of rapid shots every 2 songs, and videoed a couple of numbers.
These shots are totally undoctored. I'll get around to doing it properly soon.
Full set here if you're interested.
Murphy's funny. Got a punter onstage and submitted to a short interview. There was a lot of back and forth with the crowd. He shut down 'Ziggy Stardust' because his guitarist was out of tune, which won him no fans, but everything else more than made up for it.
Great gig. Nabbed a poster off the door on the way out. Was going to head to the Electric Ballroom afterwards and dance, then remembered it's Thursday not Friday. I wonder if I'm ever gonna make it to that place.

Nice!
Date: 2010-08-06 12:32 am (UTC)FWIW 12 years ago my first date with BF was a Bauhaus reunion tour date, nearly 12 years ago to the day (08/15/1998!) We were so into each other we barely paid attention to the band, it was just this kinda pleasant muzak in the background of our joy....
I also saw one of his solo tours in the late 80s where I was in something like the 3rd row center and he was so drop dead gorgeous with his hollow cheeks and haunting eyes... I could barely look at him.
Seeing him in London counts for extra points. Ima go cool down and stop being envious now.

I'm also not startled/surprised because I think that on some cosmic level there are bands of people connected at an intrinsic soul-kindred level... and for me one of the beauties of the internet is to make contact with people on similar or kindred plateaux that we otherwise have no chance to commune with.
In real life you and I are separated by continents, time zones, plus nearly a generation of material time, but we're able to know one another and enjoy a most amiable friendship online. And this is good.

That said, and ignoring the last Bauhaus LP, I'd still love to see him.
That first photo with the feet is great.

Date: 2010-08-06 08:35 am (UTC)I would. His best chances of coming to Oz were probably Deep or the Bauhaus reunion.
