It's a satisfaction so weird I'm not sure it even qualifies as such in the conventional sense: scraping your soul and mixing it up in such a way that you just know this is going to leave people in tears. There are easier ways to make a buck, and I'm not entirely sure why I even do this. If all art aspires to the condition of music, I should be spending more time working on guitar. This is a good piece of work, so far - it'd be a great short story - but I'm way short on word count and I admit to wishing I didn't have to do five more rounds of internal organ grinding in order to finish it.

Sadly, practicing music can be just as ego crushing, bewildering, and internal organ grinding as writing process, and is often a scramble of trying, and often failing, to meet the quality you aspire to.

Keep going. Don't worry about the word count, just be true to this story which will make people feel, and keep going.

Dreamers start things. We are artists because we finish things.

I came across an article written years ago on the importance we place on youth in creating works of moving art, and the actual difference between early bloomers like Picasson and old masters like Paul Cezanne. It's described as the difference between those who want to find and those who seek.

Sounds wanky now that I put it that way. If I can I'll type out the key section of the article. I thought it was great.

Doesn't sound wanky; when you have time, share the find/seek.

One-inch punch

Emotional punch counts for far more than word count, IMHO.

Adding details and sub-plots is nice, but it sounds like you're questioning whether it's padding compared with what's already there. Stick with it...I'm sure the effort of creating non-fluff content is worth it.

I agree with this. If it should turn out you've written a wicked novella, instead of a wicked novel - not exactly time to cry.

Heh. Thing is, I need 28000 words to make a novella. A novella is what this was always going to be. That's the problem - getting there. But it'll work.

Unfortunately I need a sale. A book sale, not a story sale. I know I can make this work just as well, but it's more soulscraping. Still, it's what I signed up for so I'll be shutting up now.
