When I chose my birth control method, I had a hell of a time finding a doctor who'd actually do it, because there's a chance it could cause infertility. Explaining that was kind of the point tended to go down like a lead balloon...

To be completely reductive, I thought of it more along the lines of "Clean up after yourself", or "Contribute."

To me, this saying is about having the wisdom and foresight to selflessly create something good that others will benefit from -- even if you don't expect a short-term benefit, or to even be around for the payoff.
It's also about trust and letting-go. After you kick-of something on that timeline, you've gotta let others tend for it.

It's the antithesis to modern politics, especially the neocon flavour.

That's precisely why it struck a chord with me, actually. Nothing to do with kids at all.

I see it as the idea of making the world a better place than you found it, for nothing more than altruism's own sake.

Mmmm. That's what i took from it, plus the selflessness of not even seeing when others benefit. But i think Damien really caught the essence of it, with the trust and letting go as well.

I really like the sentiment, more when i think about it.

Yeah the sentiment was great, and the way it was put was lovely. If everyone did live like that the world may well be a better place.
